Some older guy who never bothered looking to his right, at least until halfway through my honking. Gave a half-assed apology wave when I yelled at him, he clearly had no idea I was there until he almost hit me. Bright white car on a bright clear day. Amazing.

I do have to ask why you waited til the last minute to slam on the brakes though?
There was a good 4-5 sec window you could clearly tell he was going to be a dipshit, why not take a little action beforehand?

I’d cut him some slack. I think he was imprudent taking a left from that driveway but look at it from his view.
He has to check for traffic from three directions from his left. He glances towards you and misses you because you are blocked by the car at 4 seconds and maybe because of a huge Acura A pillar .
He then tracks the next car intending to pull out when he clears all while making sure everything is cool from three directions in the intersection.
Then he pulls out rechecking on the right. He saw you almost the same instant you saw him and he stopped. He never would have hit you as he did recheck his right.
By the way, imagine if he had a self driving car. This is exactly why I think it will be a long time before they exist as even longer before I trust one.

Oh there’s a very good chance he would’ve hit me if I didn’t floor my brakes when I did. Not anything like a hard hit, but there would’ve been some contact. I see what you’re saying, but the way I see it is if I was him, I would’ve gone “there’s a lot of traffic here, coming from too many areas to track at the same time, I want to turn left, but instead I’m going to turn right and find another way where I’m going”.
I use that gas station all the time, and manage to not almost cause accidents, so I’m finding it hard to cut him any slack. Plus it’s a pretty regular thing for people leaving from that exit to just shove themselves into traffic without much care.

More like a 2 second window when it looked like he might be a dipshit, but m y assumption was he was pulling partway into that lane, and then was going to pull in behind me, since there was no one behind me. I did stop accelerating and was braking slightly just in case, and then full brakes when he gunned it. People regularly pull way more out of that gas station then they should, trying to push into traffic, so until he gunned it I really didn’t think he was gonna go, especially with how hard to miss my car is on a bright day.

I agree it was an ill advised move on his part. He has to be looking at three directions on his left, and into the sun too. Too many possibilities of people popping out. A low probability of success event for sure.
